Victorian bushfires: Cool weather and even some light snow on alpine peaks provided some desperately needed relief for those still fighting bushfires across Victoria last week, as memorial services commenced across many parts of Australia, relief efforts continued and coronial services tried to complete the grim task of identifying the bodies of all those who perished on Black Saturday.
Terriorist cricket attack: The coordinated terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore left the cricket world shocked and angry. Six Pakistani policemen died repelling the attacks, which involved machine gun fire and rocket propelled grenades. Several Sri Lankan players and officials were injured and the driver of the small van carrying Australian umpires Steve Davis and Simon Taufel was killed. The umpires strongly criticised the security arrangements as the media speculated on a potential complete collapse of order in Pakistan.
Pacfic Brands job cuts: Union officials were still organising protests across the country at the end of last week to protest the announcement by Pacific Brands that its Australian manufacturing plants would be closing with over 1,800 staff losing their jobs. Meanwhile the Government has been hosing down any speculation of further assistance for the company to try and salvage the jobs, while leaving the door open for possible future discussion.
Sydney shark attack: There was yet another shark attack last week, this time at Avalon on Sydney’s far northern beaches as a 15 year old was dragged from the water by his father with multiple puncture wounds from what was reported to be a great white. The NSW Government came under extensive media criticism over its beach netting and shark warning systems.
Queensland election: The polls were showing a very tight race in Queensland after the first full week of the State Election campaign, with the continually worsening economic news and the distraction of Pauline Hanson’s candidacy overwhelming many of the messages of both sides, although the Liberal National Party opposition seemed to be slowly gathering momentum.
